Have you ever started a diet, then shortly after your thoughts are consumed by all the delicious unhealthy foods you have ever eaten, and now you’re feeling an irresistible urge to eat them right now?
These pesky feelings are what’s known as food cravings, and the trick to beating food cravings is through preparation and planning. Preparation and planning are about finding alternative food items and having them on hand when your craving hits. Let's look at the most common food cravings and how you can avoid and subdue them when they arise.
“It’s all about preparation and planning”
Studies suggest that the most common food cravings include high-fat foods; including largely fast food fats, sweets, and carbohydrates/starches, the issue with these foods is they do not make you feel full for long because they do not contain nutrients that make you feel full. The first step to beating a food craving is to have healthy alternatives ready, that will keep you feeling fuller for longer, this will make you feel as though you have satisfied your craving with the food and you are less likely to overeat.
The good news is there are plenty of healthy options to satisfy a craving. The key is to look for foods that are high in protein and fiber, both of which keep you full for longer.
In terms of quantities, generally aim for satisfying a craving with 200 calories of the below foods. If you ate well during the day and drank enough water, that should be enough
Greek yogurt is great for when you are craving a variety of foods such as dairy, sweets, and fats. It gives you that creamy texture and intense flavor hit without the guilt. It’s high in protein so helps you feel fuller for longer and is also great for your gut health. Also, be aware many brands may try to sneak in some added sugar, always make sure there is no added sugar. Try eating your Greek yogurt with some fresh berries for an extra boost of fiber and antioxidants.
Popcorn is considered by many a treat so it's enjoyable to eat when we feel a level of deprivation from dieting. Popcorn is also a great option when we are craving carbohydrates as it provides a texture similar to unhealthy carb options. You will also be getting some fiber in popcorn, making it great for the digestive system and increasing your feeling of fullness. But remember to grab the no added sugar options.
Dark chocolate is a savior when those sweet treat cravings hit. Make sure that you are choosing a chocolate bar that contains at least 70% cacao. This will ensure you are getting fiber to keep you full as well as minerals and antioxidants. In fact, you will actually find more antioxidants in cacao than you will find in most fruits. Now that’s some good news. But remember even dark chocolate can be high in calories, so eat in moderation.
